We promote and reinforce these values in school by encouraging pupils to show respect for on another and for adults. We want them to learn about kindness and consideration for all. We model this for pupils by demonstrating this at all times between staff and with parents, governors and any other adults we come into contact with. We want to nurture the whole child and enables each of us to realise our full potential.We use the Middlesbrough Agreed syllabus for Religious Education which covers world faiths including the Christian religion and its core values. Assemblies are often focused around current affairs which are appropriate to the age and understanding of pupils such as racial tolerance, understanding diversity in families and society and showing compassion for those in need. We aim to widen the children’s knowledge and experience of what is relevant in today’s society and multi-cultural issues to help them to become well-informed and discerning people who are able to make informed choices. Themes include: racism, politics, equality, justice, poverty, natural disasters and war. We use a range of resources and schemes that will enhance and provide variety in our approach. In lessons, children are encouraged to be independent learners and to contribute their own ideas and experiences. In early September children work together to agree a set of class rules. They will review the reasons for particular rules and the importance of adhering to them when this is appropriate. Regular class debates and discussions through PSHE, RE or curriculum linked topic work are golden threads that run across the whole curriculum. During our E-safety sessions across the academic year we help children to appreciate the importance of making informed choices and to report anything that is inappropriate or unsafe. As part of our teaching about democracy our School Council representatives are elected by their peers. With a staff member, they regularly discuss school issues, solve problems, consider improvements and engage in fund raising activities. They are responsible for producing minutes and writing letters to parents regarding things that they want to organise. Children in Year 5 and 6 have additional responsibilities such as playground buddies and house team captains. They take these responsibilities extremely seriously and are fantastic ambassadors for our school.
