Year 1

Welcome to the Year 1 page for the academic year 2021-2022. Here you will find information about our routines, learning and expectations.

Our classroom environment at the start of the year looks very similar to what the children were used to in Reception.  They are given lots of opportunities to learn through play and work takes place in small, supported groups.

Maths

  • In Maths, we will begin by recapping learning objectives from Reception – ensuring that children have mastered their understanding of numbers to 10.  In addition to their maths lessons, children will be given plenty of opportunity to explore and talk about maths in the classroom play-based provision.

Reading, Writing and Phonics

  • In Reading, we will continue to teach the skills necessary for word reading using the Sounds-Write scheme:

1. Recap the first sounds that can be represented using two letters (ll as in fill, ss as in miss, ff as in puff, zz as in buzz).

2.  Learn to read longer words with four and five sounds using the sounds the children already know.

3.  Learn further sounds that can be represented using two letters – ch, th, sh, ck, ng.

4.  Begin to learn some of the spellings of the different vowel sounds (for example, the sound /ee/ can be spelled ee. ea, e, y or ey)

Children’s comprehension and understanding of books will be developed during our ‘Shared Reading’ sessions.  During these sessions, we share and discuss high quality fiction and non-fiction texts with the children.

  • As part of our phonics sessions, children will continue to develop their skills of segmenting spoken words and writing the letters that represent the sounds they can hear.  Children will then apply these skills during English lessons and in continuous provision activities in the classroom.  This gives writing a purpose and makes in meaningful for the children.
